Renault's electric weekend record needs a longer test

Electric models reached about 60% of the brand's French sales over one promotional weekend, reinforcing a national surge but not yet proving a permanent shift.

Electric vehicles accounted for about 60% of Renault brand sales in France over the weekend ending 11 October, chief executive Fabrice Cambolive said. Reuters described the figure as a company record, reached during the final promotional open-house weekend before the Paris Motor Show.

The short window sits inside a stronger monthly trend. French government statistics put fully electric cars at a record 41.1% of new passenger-car registrations in September, up 2.9 percentage points from August. Different industry datasets report slightly different totals and shares, so the direction is clearer than any single decimal.

A national record supports the company claim

Renault's September electric share was reported at 53.5%. The company has responded by expanding production at Douai, where a single line assembles several electric models including the Renault 5, Mégane and Scénic, Alpine A290, Nissan Micra and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

Higher petrol and diesel prices have strengthened the financial case for electric cars, while purchase incentives and social leasing have supported demand. Promotional weekends can concentrate orders that would otherwise be spread across several weeks, however, which makes 60% an indicator rather than a stable market share.

Production rises before persistence is proven

The industrial effect is already tangible. Reuters said the Douai plant had added half a shift and now runs three shifts. More output from a French factory links electrification to jobs and domestic supply, but it also raises the cost of a reversal if demand weakens after incentives or fuel prices change.

Registrations are a better measure than showroom orders, and quarterly results are better than a weekend. Renault is due to report third-quarter sales on 29 October. October registration data will then show whether the national electric share can remain near September's record once promotional and policy effects are separated.

The immediate conclusion is therefore narrower than a full market transformation. Renault has evidence that French buyers will choose electric models in large numbers when price, availability and running costs align. The durable test is whether that demand survives beyond one weekend and supports profitable production without depending on permanently exceptional subsidies.
