Ikea's French jobs plan opens a negotiation, not a final tally
The retailer proposes up to 303 job cuts alongside 100 new roles. Redeployment and the consultation process will shape the outcome.

Ikea France has proposed eliminating up to 303 posts and creating 100 others under a transformation plan, according to AFP's reporting published by Boursorama on 19 October. The company cited stronger competition. Headquarters and administrative functions are the principal areas identified, rather than a reported programme of store closures.
The figures are proposals, not a count of completed dismissals. AFP reported that dialogue with employee representatives began on Monday and is expected to continue until March 2027, with another meeting in early November. The CFDT challenged the rationale and described a mixture of removals, redeployments and contractual changes. Those categories should not be collapsed into one redundancy figure.
Sales are not the same as profit
Ikea's own financial release provides useful, explicitly historical context. For the financial year ending 31 August 2025, French retail sales were €3.5 billion, down 4.4%, while customer numbers and quantities sold rose. Online sales accounted for 28.9% of revenue. The company said lower prices were part of its strategy.
That combination complicates a simple boom-or-bust account. More customers can coexist with lower revenue when prices change. Turnover also does not establish profitability. The 2025 release helps explain the business model, but it is not evidence of the precise financial position behind October 2026's proposed restructuring.
What the employment plan must address
France's official public-service guidance defines a plan de sauvegarde de l'emploi as measures intended to avoid economic dismissals or limit their number. It must include redeployment measures. Training, support for other employment and changes to working time can form part of the framework; the actual package depends on the plan.
The administrative process also matters. The labour authority reviews the agreement or employer document before implementation, with different procedural routes depending on how the plan is established. An announcement alone is therefore not proof that the proposed dismissals have been authorised or carried out.
The next useful information will be the negotiated scope and the opportunities available to affected employees. New posts cannot simply be subtracted from threatened ones as if their locations and skills were interchangeable. This account attributes the current proposal and union reaction to AFP; the company document below supplies older financial context, not independent confirmation of the new plan.
