France adds four SAMP/T NG air-defence systems to its order
The purchase raises the planned French total to 12 sections and deepens demand for the Thales-MBDA venture behind the European system.

France's defence procurement agency has ordered four additional SAMP/T NG air and missile-defence sections, raising the planned French total to 12. The DGA said the order was placed through OCCAR with Eurosam, the joint venture that brings together MBDA and Thales for the Franco-Italian programme.
The purchase is an industrial commitment rather than evidence that four new units are already operational. Aviation Week independently reported the four-system increase and the resulting total. Mer et Marine reported that the programme was launched in 2021 to address faster, more manoeuvrable and lower-observable threats, including some hypersonic profiles.
What one section contains
Eurosam describes a full section as a mobile network rather than a single launcher. Its standard configuration can include a multifunction radar, an engagement module and up to six launchers carrying eight Aster missiles each. The manufacturer claims detection beyond 350 kilometres and engagement of air-breathing targets beyond 150 kilometres, but those are supplier specifications, not independent test results reproduced by WHIF.
The French variant is also being developed for layered defence. A separate contract announced in June integrates VL MICA short-range missiles alongside Aster effectors, with future scope for very short-range missiles and counter-drone equipment. That architecture is intended to allocate different weapons to different threats instead of using a long-range interceptor for every target.
A programme, not an instant shield
For Thales and MBDA, the order extends a European production line that also serves Italy and has attracted other customers. It creates demand across radar, command systems, launchers and interceptors. The contract value was not stated in the sources consulted, so this article does not estimate revenue or margins for either company.
Capability will depend on deliveries, trained crews, missile stocks, maintenance and integration with national and allied command networks. A battery's advertised range does not translate into uniform coverage on a map, because terrain, target behaviour, sensor placement and rules of engagement all matter. Twelve planned sections should therefore not be read as twelve continuously available shields.
Source access note: the DGA announcement was indexed and consulted through search, but the ministry page timed out when opened directly. Aviation Week and Mer et Marine provided independent current reporting. Eurosam's technical page and June release were used as manufacturer context, and their performance claims are explicitly attributed.
