An artist beyond her teacher
According to the museum’s English-language press material, Gonzalès first trained in Charles Chaplin’s studio and joined Manet’s in 1869. She exhibited at the Salon between 1870 and 1883, while never joining the Impressionist group. Association with artists from that circle should therefore not be confused with participation in its group exhibitions.
The same material describes domestic interiors and women’s everyday lives alongside landscapes painted in Normandy. Her sister Jeanne appears within a close family circle that supplied subjects.
